As we head towards the end of the month of Movember it’s important to peer behind the ropey looking pornstar moustaches that have been sprouting on the face’s of men across the country.
For those that don’t know, Movember first began over a decade ago, it’s something of an accidental charity starting out as bet between friends to see who could grow the best moustache. First established in Australia, the boys from Melbourne grew for thirty days and thirty long nights the result was the beginning of what has become one of the most significant charitable movements on record.
The growing of moustaches around the world has raised in excess of £443 million. Those funds have funded over 1,200 projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide prevention helping men to live happier, healthier and longer lives.
The fact is the health and wellbeing of men has been ignored and we are in crisis. Too many men are dying too young. Men on average die four years younger than women. We live in a world where 75% of suicides are men and it’s a problem that isn’t going away. It’s a shocking statistic, but the reality is we just don’t talk enough. It’s time for change, Movember has committed to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030 and it’s time to help.
So for the last week of Movember, dig deep, do what you can, support someone growing a moustache and most importantly start a conversation, you might just save a life.
